The first thing you need to do when dealing with a broken dryer is to diagnose the problem. You can’t find a solution to that if you don’t know what exactly is wrong with your laundry dryer. Before diagnosing the problem, you should which parts are more likely to break down.

Refer to the manual of the dryer and familiarize yourself with the name of the different parts of the dryer. Troubleshooting is easier if you know what part you are dealing with.

Problem 1: Dryer Does Not Turn Off When You Open The Door

Whirlpool dryer automatically shuts down when you open the door to retrieve your clothes. If this does not happen, a blast of hot air will waft from the dryer. Unless you unplug the machine, this will continue to happen.

This is one of the Whirlpool dryer problems that is most likely caused by the lid switch. The lid has an automatic switch system. If it does not click into place, it means the machine is stuck in the closed position. This triggers the dryer to emit hot air even if the door is open. It senses that the switch is still in the close position.

You can try testing the lid switch first. Test if it is still working by using a voltmeter. You can also replace it. Buy the corresponding replacement for the model of dryer you have.

When replacing, unplug the dryer first. Remove the lint screen and remove the wiring of the switch. Place the new switch and follow the same wiring connection. Test the new connection using an ohm meter.

Problem 2: Dryer Is Not Producing Heat

This is the most Whirlpool dryer problems and usually it is caused by the heating element or the heating coil of your dryer. But first, you have to check if you are getting a good supply of energy. These machines need high power supply. The outlet should provide full 220 volts of power. You should not use an extension cord as this will only hamper the good flow of energy. You should directly plug the dryer to an outlet.

Once you have determined that the power source is not the problem, it is time to check the heating coil. Remove the back panel of the machine. Use a screw driver to extract the screws and place all them in a small container to prevent them from rolling elsewhere.

Once you have opened the back panel, locate the air duct. This will be the duct connecting the blower of the machine to the dryer drum. The heating coil and thermostats are usually inside the air duct. Remove the two wires that connect the heating coil. Use an ohm meter and check if it is still working. If it is not working, you need to replace this part. If it is working, you need to check the thermostat.

Remove the two wires and connect them together using an electrical tape. If coil starts heating up, the thermostat is the problem. After testing the wires, do not remove the electrical tape yet. This might cause fire as you have disconnected the safety mechanism of the machine when overheating.

Problem 3: Dryer Belt Came Loose Or Came Off

Open the back panel. Check the belt if it needs replacement. If there are worn out parts, you need a replacement so you will not encounter any more dryer problems in the future. The belt cannot be removed if the motor is in the way. Remove the screws mounting the motor first. Once the motor has loosened up, you can remove the old belt and install a new one. The replacement of the belt is the same as the replacement of the belt of a lawn mower or your vacuum cleaner. Carefully thread it over the belt holder. Mount the motor once again and test the tightness of the dryer belt. Press your hands on it. It should have at least half an inch of give to it. Once you have fixed this problem, return the back panel and screw them tightly. Whirlpool dryer problems can be avoided with proper belt maintenance.

Problem 4: The Dryer Won’t Turn On At All

Check if it is getting enough power. It should full 220volts power source. Like what was mentioned earlier, do not use an extension cord as this will only hamper the flow of electricity. Whirlpool dryer problems can be avoided. If this is not the cause, check the switch if it is on the open mode. It means the switch is not clicking into place. Most dryers will not operate if it senses the door switch is still open.
