So which one is better? For home use, top load washing machines were the only options before because front load washing machines were only found in Laundromats.

Top load washing machines are the traditional type of washing machine. The tub is placed vertically (this is where you fill it with clothes) and there is an agitator at the bottom part of the tub. This agitator is responsible for churning and washing the clothes, spinning it and drying it.

Front load washers follow the same principle but in a slightly different mechanism. Agitator is eliminated in this kind of washing machine and the tub is placed horizontally with the whole tub spinning in circular motion when the washing cycle is instigated.

There are so many advantages of front load washers compared to its predecessor. For one thing, it is far more energy and water efficient. You can wash more clothes than you do with the top load washer because the agitator is no longer there—more space for your clothes.

You will also need only about a third of the water you are using for top loaders since the tub itself spins. The water is well distributed unlike the top loader washing machine wherein you need to fill the whole tub with water to cover all your clothes.

Front loaders are also more compact and you can stack a dryer above it, which you cannot do with a top loader. And since a front loader does not use an agitator, it is gentle on your clothes, prolonging its life.

Top loaders do have certain advantages. You do not have to bend constantly to put your clothes inside the washing machine. It is also less expensive compared to front loaders. You can also put clothes after you have pushed the start button which you cannot do with front loaders. You can also use any kind of detergent when you have a top load washing machine as opposed to detergent-sensitive front load washing machines.
