Maytag Washer Timer Guide – Troubleshoot With Confidence
Overview
Most of the Maytag washer problems are caused by Maytag washer timer failure. The timer of a washing machine is what sets the programming cycles in motion. If this is not working properly, the machine will fail to advance to the next washing cycle.
One of the reasons why this problem always happens with washing machines is because of the link between the timer motor and the timer of the cam. This is always what is wrong with the timer problems. You can usually find the Maytag washer timer at the back portion of the control know of the cycles. There is a program inside the timer. It is placed in a cam and it is usually operated using a switch. When the motor of the timer turns the cam, the switch will also turn. This will turn on and off in order to operate the agitator. This is responsible for facilitating the fill, spin and drain functions of the machine.
How To Test The Maytag Washer Timer
Before you replace the old timer with a new one, make sure it is really malfunctioning. To find out if this is really the faulty part, you will need a volt/ohm meter with alligator clips to test the timer. Disconnect the two leads of the timer and connect it to the volt/ohm meter. Place the meter setting to RX1. If the meter reads zero, then the timer is still working perfectly. If not, you should have it replaced.
How To Remove The Maytag Washer Timer From The Machine
You should purchase a new timer before trying to work on your machine. After purchasing, remove the old timer. Here are the steps you should follow:
1. Before doing anything with your machine, make sure you unplug it first. Wait for a few minutes before trying to fix it. This way, undercurrents have already passed and dissipated. Make sure you mop up pools of water.
2. Get a small screwdriver with a flat head or use a knife to pry the round metal insert located in the control knob of the timer. Pry it carefully and do not break the control knob.
3. There is a small clip holding to the timer shaft. Slide it off the timer shaft. The knob, the dial and the spring will be released. Now carefully remove these parts of the timer and place them in a small box. You will assemble them later so you have to prevent the parts from getting lost.
4. Now remove the back cover of the control panel. There are usually two screws holding them together. You can remove them using a screwdriver. Also remove the screws that hold the front console of the timer. Make sure you know the right position of the timer so you can return it back to its original position.
5. Now that the timer is released, you can wire it up and transfer the one to the old one.
How To Wire The New Maytag Washer Timer
1. Pull the wires off the old timer from the upper left corner of the timer. Push those wires to the new timer. Make sure you place them one wire at a time. Follow the same format as the old timer. You might want to take a photo of the old positioning of the wiring so you can have a basis. But if not, you can use the markings on the terminal lug for reference.
2. Now make sure the lid switch is clicking properly when you close the washer lid. Usually, timer and lid switch problems cause inability of the washer to follow programming settings. You can adjust the switch by adjusting the screws right below the timer.
3. Place your new timer on the back of your console. Screw it tightly back on the console.
4. Now put the knob, the spring and the dial of the new timer. Clip it back on and place back the cover plate. Screw the cover plate in place.
5. Now test the timer back. Use the same method as earlier. Use your volt/ohm meter. It should read zero this time.
6. Try plugging your washer back on and testing the machine. Run an empty washing cycle and find out if the machine is going to transition to the washing stage.
The timer is a key element in the faultless running of your machine. Maintenance of this is necessary. Now that you know how to check if the timer is working, you should do this quarterly to solve common washing machine problems.
