Maytag Legacy Series Repair Guide – 5 Common Troubleshooting Tips You Will Need

Overview

Maytag legacy series are top load washers and dryers that are made to specifically cater to the clothes washing needs for those who are on a tight budget. These laundry appliances are affordable. Maytag is known for their ability to produce durable washing machines. Some of their vintage washers that were created in World War II have been passed down from generations to generations.

However, this durability streak seemed to have escaped the Maytag Legacy Series. There are some complaints about this washing machine. Common washer problems have been experienced.

Problem #1 – The Washing Machine Will Fill Up But It Does Not Immediately Go To The Washing Cycle

This problem happens when the washing machine fills up with water but the function gets trapped in there. The machine will not immediately transition in the washing cycle. It also does not go to the rinse or spin cycle.

More often than not, this problem is caused by a lid switch problem. You have to check the lid switch if it has been really closed. Sometimes, the lid can be closed but the switch is not kicking in.

You can also try checking if the machine is creating a lot of noise. If it is noisy, then it is caused by a problem in the drive belt. Siphon the excess water out first. You can do this by levelling the drain hose lower than the water level. Once the water is completely removed, you can open up the motor part where the motor is usually seen. Check the belt for signs of deterioration. If the belt is already worn out, you should have it replaced.

Problem #2 – The Washer Is Leaking Especially When It Is Already In The Cool Down Rinse Cycle

This Maytag legacy series problem happens quite a lot. There are a couple of things you can do to solve this. Use a screw driver to extract the 2 screws found at the bottom of the front panel of the machine. Once you have already removed the front panel, you can have access to the tub. Find the small hose. This is usually located on the left part of the washer tub. This is the hose that is connected to the bleach dispenser. This is usually the leaking part. Check the hose and connect it properly to the bleach dispenser. If the hose is already damaged, you can replace it with a new one.

Problem #3 – The Washer Produces A Lot Of Noise Especially When It Spins And It Is Leaking At The Bottom

This Maytag Legacy series problem is usually a little difficult to troubleshoot on your own. The noise might be caused by the worn out drive belt of the machine. You need to replace the drive belt with a new one. The leaky problem might be caused by a defective main centre bearing. However, this problem is a lot more difficult to deal with. You need the help of a professional. You can try asking for a price from three repair people. If it is a little pricey to have your machine repaired, you might as well buy a new one.

Problem #4 – The Agitator Spins But The Drum Does Not Spin During The Spin Cycle

The transmission is usually defective. Check the drive belt first. Check for signs of wear and tear. Always replace a defective belt. Once you have replaced the drive belt, check the machine if it is already spinning during the spin cycle.

Problem #5 – The Machine Is Not Spinning And It Is Starting To Smell Like Burned Out Motor

Use your screw driver and open the back door of the machine. Check the machine if it is overheating. If this happens, you should have the motor replaced. However, you need to know the specific model of your washer so you can find the appropriate motor.

Also check the washer drum. Use your hands to move the drum. If it is rotating freely, the drive belt is not working. The belt should stop it from rotating freely.

You also have to take good care of your Maytag legacy series if you want to prolong its life. Clean your washer and get rid of molds in order to reduce clogging. Also check the water hoses of your washer. Replace necessary hose if you want to prevent clogging.

More often than not, washer problems appear also because of poor maintenance. So aside from knowing how to troubleshoot your washer problems, also find out how you can maintain it properly.
