Front load washer smell can emerge easily. One minute your washer smells fine and fresh and the next minute, it smells like it has been infested by molds and mildew. Because it uses water all the time, the parts can turn moist. This will beckon the appearance of molds. Furthermore, excess detergent can cling to the walls of your washer drum. Detergent suds can mix with bacteria and germs and cause a bad washer odor.

You can control front load washer smell. Here are some treatments that you can use:

1. Sprinkle baking soda all over the interior of the machine. Make sure you also place a bit of the baking soda in the detergent, bleach and fabric conditioner compartments. Also add a bit of it on the rubber gasket of the front load door. Leave the baking soda there to diffuse unwanted odor for about two hours.

After the allotted time, turn the washer on and rinse the baking soda using the hot water cycle of the machine. Do not use the cold water cycle as this might to work well in dissolving the granules of the baking soda.

You can also try filling up the washer with hot water. Add half a bag of the baking soda. Let the machine dissolve the baking soda for a few minutes. Pause the cycle. Leave it there for about 15 minutes so the baking soda can get rid of the odor. Resume the cycle after 15 minutes.

2. Distilled white vinegar is another remedy that will help solve front load washer smell problems. It also works well in dissolving molds, mildew and hard minerals. Fill up the washer with cold or warm water. Add one to two cups of distilled white vinegar to the mixture. Pause the cycle for about 15 minutes. Resume the cycle after the allotted time. Allow the machine to dispel water.

After the vinegar cycle, run another empty water cycle to rinse out the remaining vinegar smell. Let it finish running. Dry the interior of the machine after the cycle.

3. If you don’t like using white vinegar, you can substitute it with citrus cleaners. Lemon juice should work well. Squeeze up to one cup of lemon juice. Run an empty cold water cycle and add one cup of lemon juice. Let the washer work for a few minutes before hitting the pause button. Resume the cycle after 15 minutes. Allow the machine to drain completely.

You can also try slicing one lemon into wedges. Remove the seeds of the lemon and rub the pulp of the lemon wedges on the walls of the washer drum. Also rub lemon juice on the rubber gasket and on the walls of the detergent compartment. Leave it there for about 15 minutes. After the allotted time, run an empty water cycle to rinse out the lemon juice.

How To Avoid Front Load Washer Smell

If your front load washing machine is quite prone to moldy odor, make sure you try the following tips:

1. Lessen your use of the detergent powder. If possible, switch to liquid detergent. They dissolve better. There are detergent brands with particles that do not dissolve easily. Choose high-quality detergent brands that can work better in high efficiency front loaders. Make sure you use just a small amount of the detergent. In most front load washing machines, a little bit of detergent can go a long way.

2. After the cleaning cycle, allow the machine to dry completely. Use a clean dish rag to wipe the moist areas inside and outside the washer. Also leave the front load door open to allow air to circulate inside the machine and dry the interior of the washer further. Don’t forget to wipe the rubber gasket and the washer hose.

3. After the cleaning cycle, immediately hang your clothes to dry immediately. Many people tend to forget that their moist clothes are in the washer. Molds only need a few hours to grow. Your clothes can smell moldy and musty if you leave them in the washer for a prolonged period of time.

4. Try to clean your washer periodically. If you have been using full laundry cycles lately, the machine could be dirty and grimy already from all the washing it has been doing. You can try using the vinegar technique to effectively clean the machine.

5. Replace the water filter or change it. Dirt, molds and hard minerals can accumulate inside.

You don’t have to deal with front load washer smell problems all the time. With these simple tips, you can keep your washer fresh and clean all the time.
