Kenmore Series 80 Washer Guide – Do It Yourself Repair Tips You Should Know
I am sure many people will agree when I say that the Kenmore Series 80 Washer is one of the most durable products of Kenmore. That is saying much since a lot of Kenmore products have been subjected to complaints in the past few years.
Kenmore is one of the most affordable brands of washers in the market. Perhaps this is the main reason why people readily buy their appliances. The 80 series is a reliable washer, no doubt. However, there are still possible problems that you might encounter in the future.
This is a top load washer. Top loaders, based from observation and experience, are usually less prone to breakage. They wear out slower than a front loader. Before we check out some common washer problems, let us find out first what other people are saying about this machine.
Positive Points of Kenmore Series 80 Washer
Durability is what impressed most consumers. This machine is one of the longest they have used. Some even said it lasts for 10 years and that involves little repairs and maintenance. There is nothing fancy about this machine. It comes off as a straightforward machine that does it works without the modern features seen in upscale washers. If you are looking for a simple washer, this should appeal to you.
Its cleaning functions are reliable. Stained garments will come out cleaner and whiter. Even the larger laundry loads such as a comforter can be cleaned evenly. However, you would have to use the heavy duty setting for worse stains such as grease. The machine also has several features that will allow you to do long or short cycles – whatever floats your boat. It washes clothes well even if you use the cold water function to save energy.
Another positive of this machine is that it does not have mold or mildew problems. A top loader is less prone to mold and mildew problems. This can remain fresh and mold-free even with minimal maintenance.
Cons Of Kenmore Series 80 Washer
The Kenmore series 80 washer has been integrated with an agitator. The agitator takes up a lot space so you are not able to maximize the space inside the drum. Users also said clothes can get stuck in the agitator. The sound is very audible when your clothes get stuck in the agitator. It is pretty inconvenient too if you need to remove the clothes.
There were a few problems with loose screws but that only happens when the machine has worked for a few years already. A bit of maintenance can quickly prevent the screws from coming loose.
Do It Yourself Repair Tips
Replacing the Belt
Replacing the drive belt is very common with this washer and for all other washers. When the belt wears off, the machine fails to spin and to operate. If you still have the user manual with you, try checking it for instructions on how to open up the motor area of the washer. You need a screwdriver to remove the screws the lock the back panel of the machine. Once you have unlocked it, slide it off to get to the motor.
Remove the lock of the motor and carefully lift it to loosen up the belt. Remove the belt and replace it with a new one. Hold the belt while securing the motor again. Make sure you have installed the new belt just right. Press your hands down and see to it that the belt has not be installed too tight or too loose. Replace the back panel and screw it back again.
Unclogging The Drain
Clogged drain is caused by accumulated minerals or even molds. Try siphoning the excess water out. Once you have removed the water, prepare the cleaning mixture. Mix one cup of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water and half a cup of baking soda. This will help loosen up the hard minerals and the molds. Pour it down the drain and allow it to dissolve the gunk. After an hour, test the drain if water can pass through.
Leaky Washer
If your Kenmore Series 80 Washer is leaking, you should check the source of the leak. If the hose is the problem, replace it. The rubber seal that seals the hose to the water source can get damaged and this might loosen up the connection. Also check the back portion of the machine if the leak is coming from the back connection of the washer to the water hose.
If the bottom part of the machine is leaking, this is most likely caused by damaged pump. Replace the damaged pump.
